ABOUT SRIRANGAM TEMPLE
The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, also known as the Srirangam Temple, is a breathtaking marvel of South Indian temples and generations of spirituality. Known as Srirangam, Tamil Nadu is home to Lord Ranganatha – who is a reclining profile of Lord Vishnu, and one of the largest functioning Hindu temples in the world. Its history is over a thousand years long, but traces its earliest buildings to when the rule of the Chola dynasty in the 10th century AD. The temple, through the ages, has also been subject to a number of renovations in terms of extensions and decorations by a number of Dynasties that ruled the land such as the Chola, Pandya, Hoysala and Vijayanagara Empires, which brings in the grandeur of its construction and the architecture.
The chief god worship in this temple is Ranganatha, who is believed to be Swayambhu, and temple possesses several smaller shrines of other Gods and Goddesses outside the inner most sanctum. The temple is 156 acres situated on a piece of land between two rivers Kaveri and Kollidam and this entire temple complex is a perfect example of Dravidian architecture with pillared halls, many open spaces and gopurams.
Numerous modifications and changes were made to Srirangam Temple so its spiritual essence and aesthetic beauty would also be elevated. The temple plan consists of seven concentric prakaras or walls. All these prakaras are circumambulated by the devotees as a part of their devotional activity and mark their journey towards spiritual enlightment.
The temple has attracted devotees and seekers of peace from different parts of the globe as a center for religion and culture. It has experienced periods when monarchs and their loyal subjects have adorned it, ensuring constant preservation and maintenance of the site with such high regard in religion. Besides being cherished among other holy places, Srirangam Temple is an active testimony of India’s immense spirituality and culture. Its immortal presence still evokes millions of pilgrims and followers in search of peace and divine introspection and attachment.
